Delta variant increasingly dominant in infections, RIVM expects. Oxfam-Novib: workers still exploited, despite high profits of supermarket chains. Despite the corona crisis, most companies did not need external money. By far the largest part of the Dutch business community did not need external capital to get through the corona crisis. More companies raised extra money to make investments than to keep paying the bills. Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reports this based on a survey among entrepreneurs.

In the hospitality industry, most companies needed external funding. For example, 27 percent of the catering companies attracted one percent external capital to meet their payment obligations. Another 12 percent of the catering companies needed external financing, but had not yet completed or applied for it. In culture, sports, and recreation, almost a third of companies needed external capital because of the corona crisis.

In just a few days ago, the Risk level decreased in 18 security regions. As the number of corona cases in the Netherlands continues to fall, risk levels in the Netherlands have decreased. For the first time since the end of last year, there are again regions where the lowest risk level is 'vigilant'. These are Groningen and Zaanstreek-Waterland. The latter region has gone from the highest to the lowest level in one go.

The highest risk level, 'very serious', no longer applies anywhere, but there are still five regions with the 'serious' level. This is the case in Rotterdam-Rijnmond, South Holland South, Brabant North, Gelderland South, and Flevoland.

Surinamese who lose someone to covid-19 can receive a contribution from the government of up to 10,000 Surinamese dollars, about 400 euros, in the funeral costs. The government decided to do this because the costs for the funeral of a corona victim are much higher than those for a normal funeral. For example, a cold store has to be rented for five days and there are extra costs for body bags and the transport of the body.

In case of multiple covid deaths within a family, the amount is multiplied and if both parents or caregivers in a family die, the government pays for the entire funeral. The measure will take effect retroactively from 1 June.

The situation in Suriname was very serious for several weeks. The Brazilian variant in particular has affected many Surinamese. The hospitals and ICUs were overcrowded and doctors were faced with the choice of which patients to admit and which not. Meanwhile, the country is starting to recover from code black. "The hospitals are still full, but people no longer have to die in the corridors," surgeon Chander Mahabier told NOS on Thursday.  Brussels approves an Italian recovery plan of 191 billion euros.

The European Commission gives green light to Italy's recovery plan. The country will receive 191.5 billion euros in corona aid, the highest amount in the European Union. The amount consists of 68.9 billion in subsidy and 122.6 billion in favorable loans.

The Italian government wants to invest 37 percent of the money in projects to achieve the climate goals and 25 percent in digital projects. These include cleaner public transport, energy-efficient buildings, the digitization of companies, and the expansion of the 5G network.

In total, the Commission has an aid package of almost €700 billion available to stimulate the economy in Europe after the corona pandemic. 21 countries have applied for support, and plans have now been approved for ten countries. The Netherlands has not yet applied for support from the European Commission.

EMA approves two new plants to produce the Pfizer vaccine BioNTech will have two extra factories in Europe for the production of their vaccine. It concerns an Allergopharma factory in Reinbek, Germany, and a Novartis Pharma branch in Stein, Switzerland.

The factories are approved by the European Medicines Agency EMA and production can be started immediately.

The hospitals are conducting the study among their employees who have received the Janssen vaccine. They get a second shot; this can be with Janssen, but also with Pfizer or Moderna. The researchers then assess whether the combinations of the different vaccines are safe and whether they elicit a good immune response.

They are also very curious whether the combination of different vaccines might even work better against the new variants of the virus. This would be advantageous because it would reduce the difficulties in the event of vaccine delivery problems. The first findings of the investigation are expected at the end of October.

RIVM: 'Delta variant of the coronavirus will displace another variant' The delta variant (also known as the Indian variant) of the coronavirus is becoming dominant in the Netherlands faster than previously thought. But that does not mean that the number of corona infections is increasing, explains Aura Time of the RIVM.

Van Dissel: five 'vulnerabilities' determine any new wave in the autumn.  Five factors determine whether there will be a new wave of contamination after the summer when the current favorable 'seasonal effect' has worn off. That is what Jaap van Dissel of the RIVM said in his briefing in the House of Representatives.

Two of those "vulnerabilities" are the Dutch person's willingness to vaccinate and the question of how long the vaccines protect people against the virus. How many new, more contagious variants arise (possibly even more contagious than the delta variant that is rapidly emerging) and to what extent the virus is introduced into the Netherlands by travelers also plays a role. And finally, according to Van Dissel, people must adhere to the applicable rules, such as the distance measure in particular.

The good news, says Van Dissel, is that research shows that the vaccines not only protect people individually against disease but also ensure that those people spread the virus less.

Nine months in prison for conspiracy theorist Bodegraven The police judge in The Hague has sentenced conspiracy theorist Wouter R. to nine months in prison, three of which are conditional, for making incendiary and threatening videos against RIVM director Jaap van Dissel and the lawyer of the municipality of Bodegraven-Reeuwijk. Nine months had been demanded unconditionally against R.

According to the police judge, R. has exceeded the limits of freedom of expression. Among other things, R. posted a video in which he mentioned the location and time when Van Dissel would receive a prize from the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences, combined with the sound of an explosion.

Many more spectators in Wembley in the final phase of the European Championship

The British government has decided to welcome 60,000 supporters at Wembley Stadium in London for the two semi-finals and the final battle of the European Football Championship. A sold-out Wembley is normally good for 90,000 spectators.

Due to the increased number of infections with the delta variant of the coronavirus in the United Kingdom, it seemed uncertain recently whether the denouement of the European Championship can be played in London. Some countries preferred not to. For example, Italy called on UEFA to have the matches played elsewhere, but UEFA repeatedly emphasized that the matches will be played in London.

About 22,000 football fans were always welcome at the group matches at Wembley Stadium. For the knockout phase, that number will increase to 45,000 visitors, the BBC writes. Anyone who has a ticket must show a negative corona result in advance or demonstrate that he or she has been fully vaccinated. The injections must be administered at least two weeks before the competition.

  • The last general practitioners will also receive AstraZeneca for a second shot this week

This week, the last general practitioners will also receive the doses of AstraZeneca they need to give 60-64 year-olds their second shot, the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport reports. These are general practitioners in Zeeland, South Holland, and Gelderland. The other provinces have already received the vaccines before.

Minister de Jonge: "It is great that the very last general practitioners now receive their last deliveries of AstraZeneca. We must protect ourselves well, especially with the emerging delta variant, that second injection is really important for this. The last people aged 60 to 64 years also receive now, fortunately, their second vaccination soon."

Recently, the Health Council stated that the second AstraZeneca shot could follow the first one more quickly than initially stated. After four weeks, people aged 60 to 64 can now get their second vaccination. That was 12 weeks.

The Oranje Fonds has set up a social recovery fund for people who have run into problems due to the corona pandemic. An initial amount of more than 4 million euros has been made available by the fund. This will help to tackle problems caused or exacerbated by the corona crisis. For example, according to the Oranje Fonds, loneliness has increased among many people, more people have ended up in poverty and there is a great need for care by volunteers.

"The social consequences of this pandemic will not disappear if the masks go off," says Sandra Jetten, director of the fund. "That is why it is now time to act together." The Oranje Fonds, therefore, asks other organizations to participate in the Corona Social Recovery Fund.

In 2002, the Orange Fund was the national wedding gift to Prince Willem-Alexander and Princess Máxima and works to strengthen the social side of society.

Corona figures significantly lower again

Last week, the number of positive tests fell by a third to 5,800 in one week, the RIVM reports. A month and a half ago, that number of positive tests was achieved in one day. Today it concerns 724 positive tests.

It is also becoming quieter in hospitals: last week the number of admissions fell from 247 to 160, a decrease of one-third, according to figures from the NICE foundation. Of these, 32 people ended up in the ICU; a 25 percent decrease. 17 people died, compared to 21 a week earlier.

The occupation also decreased. There are now 462 people with a a corona in hospital (yesterday: 491), 185 of whom are in the ICU (yesterday: 197), reports the National Coordination Center for Patients Spreading (LCPS).
